Sammy Hoult
From Army Mechanic to Mining Career
“Ironside didn’t just help me get a qualification—they helped me rebuild a future. I wouldn’t be where I am without their support.”
– Sammy Hoult
Exploring New Career Opportunities
After a distinguished 14-year career in the Australian Army, where he served as a Vehicle Mechanic across Darwin, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, Sammy Hoult began considering his next step. Though he had already explored multiple opportunities within the mining industry, it was a referral from a mate that led him to Ironside Resources and ultimately the career path ultimately forged down.
Entering the Trade Upgrade Program
Sammy joined Ironside’s Trade Upgrade Program in May 2024, eager to transition his deep mechanical experience into the civilian workforce as a Heavy Mobile Plant Mechanic. His goal: to leverage his military background to build a long-term career in mining, back home in Perth where he and his wife wanted to settle down with their two sons and reconnect with family.
Balancing Leadership Experience and Trade Skills
Understandably, Sammy had some hesitations about returning to the tools full-time, having spent the last five years in more senior supervisory and management roles within the Army. The unique benefit of Ironside’s Trade Upgrade Program is that it recognises candidates like Sammy, whose skills may have faded slightly but whose leadership and technical aptitude remain strong. The program creates a supported environment where veterans can reacquaint themselves with mobile plant equipment, rather than being thrown straight into full technician roles as many mining companies require.
A Strong Start with Macmahon
The career change proved to be a strong fit. Sammy commenced his journey with Macmahon through the program, quickly becoming a valuable member of the team, working FIFO at Tropicana and completing practical training at the WAC Workshop in Perth. From Day 1, he embraced the camaraderie and purpose that Ironside fosters, symbolised by the traditional program group photo featured on our Facebook page, which proves to be a small but powerful sign of the community and professionalism that sets Ironside’s program apart.
Facing Setbacks with Support
Partway through his placement, life threw up an unexpected challenge. Sammy required wrist surgery just days before the birth of his son. Originally planning a three-month leave to focus on his growing family, his recovery extended to six months, and he was unsure if returning to complete the program would even be possible.
However, with the proactive support of Macmahon’s Trade Development team – Mike, Aiden, Nathaniel and Phi, Sammy was given tailored training scenarios and duties that accommodated his post-surgery restrictions. The team went above and beyond to help him stay engaged, offering modified work at the WAC Workshop and structured learning within his medical capacity. Thanks to this adaptive approach and committed mindset, Sammy successfully completed the Trade Upgrade Program and earned the qualification as a Heavy Mobile Plant Mechanic.
Looking Ahead: A New Career Path
While Sammy’s wrist injury now prevents him from returning to hands-on mechanical work full-time, the qualification and experience gained through Ironside’s program remain highly valuable. He is now actively pursuing opportunities in planning, scheduling and white-collar roles within the mining sector, roles where his technical knowledge, leadership experience, and trade qualifications make him an ideal candidate for the next phase of his career. Though this transition may take some time, Sammy is optimistic and well-positioned to build a sustainable long-term career off the tools, while still leveraging his Ironside pathway.
Veterans Strengthening the Workforce
Importantly, Sammy recognises the broader value that veterans bring to mining – not just in technical capability but in leadership and culture. He strongly believes that programs like Ironside’s are essential to building a resilient, future-ready workforce for the mining sector, opening doors for ex-ADF members to step into roles that many mining companies struggle to fill.
Sammy’s story is just one example of how the Ironside Trade Upgrade Program delivers far more than a qualification. It builds careers, strengthens industries, and empowers veterans to lead again.
